Research on municipal sludge used for production of eco-friendly red bricks
In this paper, the feasibility of recycling sludge from sewage treatment plants for the production of red bricks is evaluated. The process of treating sewage produces large amounts of sludge, mainly organic sludge, which is often landfilled. In this study, two different types of sludge (from 0~10%instead of clay) are evaluated as raw materials for the production of red bricks through microstructural and physicomechanical analysis . The results show that the addition of sludge reduced the apparent density of the bricks and increased the weather-ing sensitivity of the bricks, which is due to the higher porosity generated during the firing process. Adding 6%sludge to the clay mixture used to produce red bricks is a viable,sustainable,low-impact recycling solution.
