Effects of feeding by two aphid species on the feeding behavior of Acyrthosiphon gossypii and Aphis gossypii on cotton
The feeding adaptability of Acyrthosiphon gossypii and Aphis gossypii to the cotton fed by aphids was analyzed to reveal the feeding competition mechanism between two aphid species.Sixteen important parameters were selected to compare the feeding behaviors of the two aphid species on healthy cotton, the cotton fed by Ap.gossypii and the cotton fed by Ac.gossypii for 6 h by electrical penetration graph(EPG).It was found that:1)When Ac.gossypii and Ap.gossypii fed on healthy cotton, the total feeding duration of Ap.gossypii in the xylem(G-wave)was longer than that of Ac.gossypii.There was no significant difference in the phloem feeding capacity between Ac.gossypii and Ap.gossypii feeding on healthy cotton, but the feeding capacity of Ap.gossypii in the xylem was greater than that of Ac.gossypii.2)When Ac.gossypii and Ap.gossypii fed on the cotton previously fed by Ac.gossypii, the total feeding duration of Ap.gossypii in the phloem(E2-wave)was(2 531.33±60.86)s,significantly longer than E2-wave(2 196.00±98.91)s of Ac.gossypii.When Ac.gossypii and Ap.gossypii fed on the cotton previously fed by Ap.gossypii, the total duration of Ap.gossypii in the phloem and xylem was significantly greater than that of Ac.gossypii(P<0.05),suggesting that the feeding tolerance of Ap.gossypii was greater than Ac.gossypii for the cotton previously fed by Ap.gossypii.Ap.gossypii was more adaptable than Ac.gossypii to the cotton previously fed by Ac.gossypii and Ap.gossypii, indicating an advantage in the feeding competition. The total duration of F-wave of Ac.gossypii and Ap.gossypii feeding on the cotton previously fed by Ac.gossypii or Ap.gossypii was longer than that on healthy cotton, indicating that the cotton previously fed by aphids can induce insect resistance to some degree.
