Biological activity of Eurycoma longifolia extracts to the workers of the red imported fire ant,Solenopsis invicta
To determine the control efficacy of Eurycoma longifolia extracts on the workers of Solenopsis invicta, the toxic activity of the major component quassinoids and the ants'behavioral abilities were assessed using a water test tube feeding method. The results showed that the toxic activity of the compound ep6 was positively correlated with treatment time and concentration. The mortality rate of the ants was 77.78%ten days after treatment at a concentration of 20 mg/L.The compound ep6 significantly inhibited the aggregation rate, capture rate, percentage of walking ants, climbing rate, and food recognition rate, but had no significant effect on the food consumption rate in most treatment. The aggregation rate, capture rate, climbing rate, percentage of walking ants, food recognition rate, and food consumption rate decreased by 73.86,50.27,44.99,27.78,6.67,and 10.81 percentage points ten days after treated with 20 mg/L ep6,respectively,compared to the control group. These results indicate that the quassinoid compounds from E.longifolia have significant toxic and inhibitory activity against the worker ants of SS.invicta.
