New occurrence of Spodoptera exigua(Lepidoptera:Noctuidae)infestation on Platycladus orientalis
Spodoptera exigua(Hübner)(Lepidoptera:Noctuidae)is a globally distributed and intermittent polyphagous pest in agriculture and forestry, which inflicts serious economic damage on many agricultural and horticultural crops. In our investigation,we found that an insect damaged the leaves of Platycladus orientalis at the nursery base in Anyang county,Henan province in 2022.Morphological identification and molecular characterization using mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit Ⅰ(CO Ⅰ)gene confirmed that the collected insect was S.exigua.We also briefly described the damaged characteristics of the pest and its life behavior on P.orientalis.Further,Investigation was conducted to determine the damage situation of the insect in different regions in Henan province. This is the first report of infestation by beet armyworm on P.orientalis.These results will provide the basic information for future monitoring and pest control of S.exigua in P.orientalis.
