First report on the damage caused by the fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda on Canna indica and Arundo donax
Since fall armyworm,Spodoptera frugiperda,invaded China,it has been found to damage corn,rice,sugar cane,peanuts and other crops.In May 2023,the damaged plants of Canna indica and Arundo donax were observed by S.frugiperda along the sides of Danshui river in Huiyang district,Huizhou city,Guangdong province.It was found that the average number of larvae per 100 plants was 15.0 larvae and 13.1 larvae respectively.Moreover,most of larvae were in 5th to 6th instars,and some were 3rd to 4th instars.Fall armyworm larvae damaged the whorl leaves,causing damage such as translucent skylights,rows of holes,and gnawed,even the furled whorl leaves or flower buds might also be chewed off.This article introduced the damage to C.indica and A.donax by S.frugiperda,and provided a reference for the monitoring the population and control of the pest in landscape plants.
