The investigation of the cause of false positives and false negatives found in cytologic examination on exfoliated cel s from serous memebrane effusion
The goal of this study is to investigate the cause of false positive and false negative results revealed in cytologic examination on exfoliated cells from serous memebrane effusion and to provide some valuable data for clinical cancer diagnosis.Method: Obtain 100-200ml fresh sample then examine the sample immediately by LBP system and microscopy.Result: In 500 cases of cytologic examinations on exfoliated cells from serous memebrane effusion , there are 272 positive results including 1 false positive;228 negative results including 35 false negative results. Conclusion: Resulting from the cellular diversity, complex cellular components, diverse morphology and alignment of serous cavity, malignant and benign sample may reveal similar characteristics, leading to false positives or false negatives. Thus, Careful examination of cellmorphology is crucial for qualitative analysis of serous memebrane effusion.
