Approach responses of Dendroctonus valens to the bark of 4 conifers
The volatiles profiles of 4 kinds of Chinese pine, Pinus tabuliformis Carr, P. hwangshanensis Hsia,P. massoniana Lamb and Larix principis - rupprechtii Mayr were surveyed with Super - Q absorbent in headspace absorption method. GC - MS analysis showed that α - pinene and β - pinene were main components in all 4 conifers' barks. Single bark feeding test showed that Dendroctonus valens LeConte (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) can bore and feed on all 4 conifers' bark. Food approaching test and olfactometer were employed in laboratory and the behavioral responses of D. valens to the barks were different significantly. P. tabuliformis was most attractive to the insect, followed by Larix principis - rupprechtii . There was no significant relevance between the attraction of the insect to the barks and the components of its volatiles.
