Investigation on occurrence and damage of Paracoccus marginatus in Fuzhou
The papaya mealybug,Paracoccus marginatus Williams and Granara de Willink,is a globally significant quarantine pest that has recently invaded China,causing damage in several southern provinces.This pest has the potential harm to ornamental plants and food crops seriously.In order to clarify the occurrence and damage of P.marginatus in Fuzhou,providing scientific references for its monitoring and controlling this pest by the gardening and agricultural sectors.A combination of visual method and search surveys was used to conduct on the occurrence and damage caused by P.marginatus in residential areas,parks green spaces,main traffic roads and courtyard of the unit within the jurisdiction of Fuzhou from 2021 to 2023.The pests infected 35 species of plants belonging to 34 genera and 23 families,including 23 species from 6 families being reported for the first time.Analysis of plant damage rates showed that the highest infestation rates,exceeding 80%,were observed in host plants such as Calliandra haemato-cephala,Hibiscus syriacus and Carica papaya.The host damage index indicated that Salvia splendens,Solanum torvum were the most severely damaged.P.marginatus has seriously harmed 14 species of greening plants in Fuzhou,particularly on the green plants in residential areas and main traffic roads.The potential threat of P.marginatus to food security requires heightened vigilance.
