Licorice is an important component in many Chinese traditional medicines. As its secondary metabolites, licorice flavonoids not only have antiinflammatory, antioxidative, antitumor, antiviral and antibacterial effects, but also are used in food, cosmetics and other industries. Here we briefly described the classification and histochemical localization of licorice flavonoids, the recent progresses in the production of licorice flavonoids by different tissue culture approaches the regulation of influence factors among biosynthesis were summarized simultaneously. Finally, the problems remained to be studied and the possible research directions in this field are proposed. It can support a new insight into further study on utilization of licorice flavonoids.
