The water permeability and ultrastructure of the husk and seed coat, embryo dormancy and inhibition activity of seed leach liquor of Crataegus songorica seed were determineed. The results showed that the em-bryo of C. songorica seed had dormanced, and the dormancy of the seed was mainly attributed to its husk and seed coat. The mechanical and permeability barrier of husk and seed coat had a negative effect on germination to a certain extent, but seed dormancy of C. songorica was mainly due to the inhibitory substances. Etching damaged the husk surface structure, made the cuticle shedding, husk thinning and micropyle increased. But pal-isade structure and cell arrangement did not change;the seed surface had cracked, but did not affect seed viabil-ity. The bioassay results indicated that the inhibitors were distributed in all the fractions of the seeds, and the in-hibition activity was different.
