Progress in the roles of SEO/SEOR proteins in plant growth and development and stress responses
SIEVE ELEMENT OCCLUSION(SEO)/SIEVE ELEMENT OCCLUSION-RELATED(SEO/SEOR)pro-teins extensively exist in sieve tubes of dicotyledonous and some monocotyledonous plants and play unique roles in various physiological processes of pant growth and development. The rapid sealing of sieve pores by SEO/SEOR proteins after phloem injury facilitates to prevent the critical loss of turgor and photosynthate, which is believed to have important roles in response to abiotic stresses, such as wound-ing,heat,low-temperature and salt,as well as biotic stresses caused by aphids and phytoplasmas. This re-view focuses on the progress in the structure and classification of SEO/SEOR proteins, their functions in plant growth and development, and response to abiotic and biotic stresses, and gave an outlook of the re-search area related to SEO/SOER proteins in the future,so as to provide reference for further study on cor-relation between SEO/SEOR proteins and crop yield,as well as the mechanism for the enhancement of crop stress resistance caused by SEO/SEOR proteins.
