Effects of magnesium on cellulose, pectin, and mineral elements of wax gourd(Benincasa hispida)fruit during development
Magnesium(Mg)is an essential nutrient element for plant growth and development, which has an important effect on the yield and quality of wax gourd. However, the effects of magnesium on cellulose, pectin, and mineral elements in wax gourd during fruit development are still unclear. To formulate optimal fertilization scheme for wax gourd cultivation,we used the main cultivar'Tiezhu 2'in South China as mate-rials to perform treatments with or without Mg supplement(90 kg·ha-1 MgO).The fruit samples were col-lected at the early, middle, and late stages of fruit development to determine cellulose, pectin, and mineral elements concentrations. The results showed that cellulose concentration in the flesh of wax gourd in-creased gradually with fruit development and Mg treatment had no significant effect on cellulose concen-tration.Protopectin was the main pectin substance in the wax gourd fruit, accounting for 45.57%-69.31%.The concentrations of soluble pectin and total pectin decreased first and then increased with the fruit de-velopment.Compared with CK,Mg treatment increased the concentrations of soluble pectin, protopectin, and total pectin in the middle part of wax gourd with an increase of 43.34%-83.76%,at the middle fruit stage.Treatment with Mg increased the concentrations of P,K,Ca and Mg by 15.44%-50.59%,in the mid-dle part of wax gourd at mid stage of fruit development, and decreased the concentrations of Ca and B by 20.05%-45.93%,at end stage. The correlation analysis showed that Mg was positively correlated with pro-topectin,soluble pectin and cellulose, and calcium was positively correlated with protopectin in wax gourd fruit.Taken together, the early and middle stages of fruit development are the key periods for the increase of pectin and cellulose. The application of magnesium at the base fertilizer and flowering stage can sig-nificantly increase pectin and mineral nutrition in the middle part of fruit, which is benefit for improving yield and commodity quality, but can reduce the calcium and boron concentrations at the maturity stage. Therefore,it is necessary to supplement magnesium fertilizer appropriately and timely to avoid the hidden risk of excessive magnesium application to reduce the storage quality.
