Abstract
Contemporary philosophy of life requires a new understanding of the teleonomy and unity of life itself, both of which point to the common source of Aristotle. In Aristotle's philosophy, nutritive soul is a basic soul function, which can be divided into nutritive soul(in a narrow sense)and reproductive soul. The key to understanding it lies in demonstrating the unity of the two capacities and revealing their metaphysical implications. The(narrowly defined)nutritive soul and reproductive soul constitute a relationship of"neither identical nor different",forming a closed cycle that ensures the continuous reproduction breed in an endless succession of life. The important significance of Aristotle's theory of the nutritive soul lies in offering a teleonomy without the mind for today's philosophy of life, which helps to gain a deeper understanding of the relationship between body and mind and the wholeness of life.
