On "the Thorough Understanding of Being in the Sense of Copula" and Its Significance
Chen Kang,He Lin,Xiong Wei and many other predecessors have put forward different understandings as well as translations of the term"being",which include"shi"(being in the sense of copula),"you"(there be)and"zai"(somewhere). This choice of terminology indicates their reservations about translating being into"cunzai"(in the sense of existence)out of a recognition that this translation is problematic. However, although these predecessors did propose"shi"and talk about the translation of"shi",their stance cannot be called"the thorough understanding of being in the sense of copula".After all, there is a fundamental difference between adopting and discussing the translation of"shi"on the one hand and"the thorough understanding of being in the sense of copula"on the other hand. The work of our predecessors demonstrates a progress in philosophical research and a spirit of questioning, criticizing as well as enterprising. The significance and value of their work should be fully recognized, while their critical spirit be inherited and carried forward. We must also realize that"the thorough understanding of being in the sense of copula"not only constitutes a continuation and development of our predecessors'work but also marks an advancement in philosophical research, which is therefore of considerable significance to philosophical studies today.
