Exploring the Phenomenology of Design and Its Intentional Schemas
Inherent in human nature as a fundamental activity and expression, design pervades human evolution and all domains of human activity. However, history has witnessed to a long-standing negligence and lack of scrutinization on design in itself.Addressing the"fourfold concealment,"namely of forgetting existence,of adhering to rationalist tradition,of specializing and of artifact, this paper will disclose the fundamental significance of design in human activities which has only gradually emerged during the industrial age.To unveil its essence it is required to reflect on the philosophical tradition and to examine the obscured nature of design through complex phenomena of technology, especially the particularly large-scale gestalts and genesis of artifacts.Adhering to the principle of"returning back to things themselves,"and via a critical expansion of Ide's phenomenology of technology, the essence of design is elucidated by means of the intentional schemas of"mutual generation,""humanization,""materialization,"and"mutual integration."Design, rather than technology, shapes human destiny, thereby calling for a holistic view of"grand design"over through the entire human history.
