Needle Knife Combined with Muscle Energy Technique in the Treatment of Iliotibial Band Syndrome:A Randomized Controlled Trial
Objective To observe the clinical efficacy of needle knife combined with muscle energy technique(MET)in the treatment of iliotibial band syndrome(ITBS).Methods Totally 89 ITBS patients who visited People's Hospital Affiliated to Fujian University of Traditional Chinese Medicine from March to December 2022.Of them,72 in line with the inclusion criteria were assigned to the experimental group and the control group using random digit number,36 cases in each group.Needle knife(based on the theory of meridian tendons, the important meridian tendon lesion points"Chengguci","Chengfeijian"and"Yanglingci"were selected for relaxation by needle-knife treatment, once per week for 2 consecutive weeks)combined with MET(referring to MET recommended on the vastus tensor fasciae latae and the gluteus medius muscle, once per day for 2 successive weeks)were performed to patients in the experimental group. Those in the control group took Celecoxib(0.2 g after breakfast for 14 successive days)in combination with MET.Numerical Rating Scale(NRS)scores,Lower Extremity Functional Scale(LEFS)scores, isometric contraction muscle strength of gluteus medius, and acoustic palpation elasticity measurements of iliotibial fascicle in the two groups were compared before treatment and one week after ending the treatment.Clinical efficacy, and NRS scores and LEFS scores were also compared between the two groups at a 3-month follow-up after treatment. Results At 1 week after the end of treatment the overall clinical effectiveness rate of the experimental group was 91.67%(33/36 cases),significantly higher than that of the control group[86.11%(31/36 cases),x2=16.374,P<0.05].NRS scores,LEFS scores, and acoustic palpation elasticity measurements of the iliotibial band of the lateral femoral condyles were better than those before treatment in the two groups(P<0.05).And those were better in the experimental group than in the control group(P<0.05).The LEFS score of the experimental group was better than that of the control group at the 3-month follow-up after treatment(P<0.05).Conclusion Needle knife combined with MET for ITBS reduced the stiffness of the iliotibial band, showing good immediate effect on the release of pain and the recovery of lower limbs function.
