Study on the Correlation Between Body Mass Index,Constitutions of Chinese Medicine and Hypertension in the Elderly
Objective To analyze the correlation between body mass index, constitutions of Chinese medicine, and the risk of hypertension in the elderly. Methods A total of 3488 elderly people who underwent physical exami-nation in a community in Wuhan in 2021 were selected. The basic data of the population were collected, and the constitutions of Chinese medicine were identified. The differences in the prevalence of hypertension among popula-tions with different characteristics and populations with different constitutions of Chinese medicine were analyzed using Pearson-x2.The impact of body mass index combined with traditional Chinese medicine constitutions on the risk of hypertension were analyzed using logistic regression. Results Except gender, the prevalence rate of hyper-tension had significantly difference in age, marital status, with or without diabetes, and the body mass index distri-bution(P all<0.05).The difference in the prevalence rate of hypertension among different traditional Chinese medicine constitutions were also statistically significant(P all<0.05).Using the constitution of yin-yang harmony group as a control, the risk of hypertension in the constitution of phlegm-dampness group were 1.396 times[95%CI(1.137-1.714)]higher than the control group, while there was no statistically significant difference in other types of traditional Chinese medicine constitution(P>0.05).Using the normal body mass index group as a control, the risk of hypertension in the overweight and obese groups were respectively 1.533 times[95%CI(1.281-1.836)]and 2.478 times[95%CI(1.852-3.315)]higher than the control group.Using the constitution of yin-yang harmony and normal body mass index group as a control, the constitution of yin-yang harmony and obese group had the highest risk of hypertension[OR=3.573,95%CI(2.708-4.714)].The combination of phlegm-dampness constitution and high body mass index significantly increased the risk of hypertension when compared to the yin-yang harmony con-stitution in combination with normal body mass index group. Conclusion The risk of hypertension increased sig-nificantly with the increase of body mass index and in population with phlegm-dampness constitution. Therefore, adjusting weight and improving abnormal constitution of Chinese medicine could prevent hypertension.
