The Composition of Military Force in the Social Governance System of Counties in the Song Dynasty
In the social governance system of counties in the Song dynasty, military force was the foundation. It gradually formed a variety of compound force operation systems, and provided a violent(power)foundation for the government to control rural areas.Within a county, there were generally three types of military force systems. The"regular army"refers to the military force mainly used for defending the enemy, which is mainly deployed in counties according to the importance, urgency, and mountain-river situation. It is not subject to local control;Judicial force has gradually formed a segmented power exercise model in various regions and is the main maintainer of grassroots social order;Defense force emerged in response to significant resistance pressure within the ruling region, but due to the inability of the national finance to bear its enormous expenses,it gradually turned into military service. The coordination of various military structures presents a complex interactive relationship in grassroots social governance, demonstrating the entanglement of state violence and various forces in rural society from multiple perspectives. To analyse the dynamic changes in the control mode and governance methods of grassroots society in the Song dynasty, and observing the operational mode of grassroots society within the county,it is necessary to pay attention to the structure of the military system within the county.
