Discussions of Matchmaker in Marriage of the Pre-Qin Period
The matchmaker played an important role in ancient marriage,of which the foundation was laid in the pre-Qin period.The earliest matchmaker began in prehistoric times when human beings entered the marriage outside the tribe.The earliest female ancestor of each ethnic group should be the goddess of marriage and fertility of that ethnic group"Gao Mei",such as Tushan Shi of Xia,Jian Di of Shang,Jiang Yuan of Zhou,etc.The"matchmaker"in Zhouli is the official marriage media organization in the Zhou dynasty,which is responsible for the statistics and management of married people,the implementation of persuasion to marry early and have more children,and the opportunity for single men and women of the right age to form a family,whose top leader should be an elderly woman with considerable experience in birth management.The"Shizhe""Shi"and"Bin"in Yili·Shi Hunli should be the matchmaker in the process of aristocratic marriage.Zuo Zhuan recorded the transnational marriages between some vassal states,and the level of matchmaker was relatively high,usually the ruling minister or prime minister of the country.The poems reflecting family marriage and love in the"national style"of The Book of Songs were mostly matchmakers of the marriage of the civilian class,which was the most matchmaker group in the society at that time.As an ancient and important social role,the matchmaker needs to have high professional accomplishment and language ability,which is beyond the competence of ordinary people.
