Reflections on the Geography and Related Issues of the Western Expedition in The Biography of King Mu
The significant differences in the locations recorded of the Quanrong tribe, the background and transportation routes of King Mu's conquest of Quanrong in the Guoyu·Zhouyu and The Biography of King Mu indicate that the author of The Biography of King Mu is completely unaware of the historical events of King Mu's conquest of Quanrong during the Western Zhou period, and it is entirely fabricated.Based on the analysis from multiple perspectives such as linguistics and philology,it seems to be possible to infer that the Shan Jing section of the Shanhai Jing may have been written earlier than The Biography of King Mu,while the Hai Jing and Huang Jing sections of the Shanhai Jing may have been written later than the The Biography of King Mu.The place names for the western expedition to the lower reaches of the Nanhe River in The Biography of King Mu are often the compilation with the place names in the Xicishan Jing. The ambiguity and complexity make it difficult to accurately verify the place names. Therefore, the scholars should first correctly handle the relationship between the accuracy and ambiguity of the geographical names in The Biography of King Mu.
