Interpretation of Large-scale Variety Performances in the Court of Song Dynasty
While orderly palace variety shows in the Song dynasties share similarities, many differences emerge between the Northern and Southern Song Dynasties. In the Southern Song Dynasty, the first is the reduction in the large-scale group dance with hundreds of participants;second,it greatly reduced the number of group singing and dancing with male and female dancers;third, the performance of"Zaju"changed. These changes show the restriction imposed by the national situation, political environment and social situation on court life. The planning of large-scale variety shows in the court during the Song Dynasty embodies two distinct characteristics:precise guidance of emotion and meticulous control of performance rhythm. On the court, humor is mainly brought by the contrast of costumes, playful performance and the entrance of Zaju. The arrangement of these shows in the court of the two Song Dynasties contains the philosophical concepts of combining tranquility with vibrancy, solo with group performances, and elegance with commonality, which reflects the planner's meticulous artistic thinking ability, superb artistic control and outstanding aesthetic pursuit.
