The Graphic and Textual Narrative and Unity in Diversity of the Chinese Nation in the Fuxi Myth
The Fuxi myth has long faced a problem of mixed language narrative and image narrative systems. Early language described the imperial achievements of Fuxi, while images depicted him with a human head and snake body, emphasizing his role in human creation. Language narrative constructed the genealogy of the Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors in Chinese creation mythology, while image narrative preserved the divine nature of the Fuxi myth throughout this genealogy. Images are stable and resilient, and there are the real demand as the internal driving force. Besides, the lack of external impact on image elements ensures the basic appearance of the Fuxi myth from the Han Dynasty to the Sui and Tang Dynasties. After the invention of the Eight Trigrams, the image genealogy of the Fuxi myth changed, reshaping image pattern of the Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors. By the Song Dynasty,Fuxi emerged as a saint image, while the folk stories of Fuxi and Nüwa transformed into sibling stories. The narrative of images and language is once again mixed, forming a multifaceted identity of the Fuxi myth. The image of Fuxi is of great significance for the recognition of Chinese culture and is a witness to the modern inheritance of ancient myths. Compared with Greek mythology, the narrative inheritance of visual landscapes and ritual behaviors proves the modern vitality and deep root of narrative genealogy of Chinese myth.
