Research Progress on Regulation of bHLH Transcription Factors on Biosynthetic Pathway of Terpenoids in Medicinal Plants
Terpenoids are the most diverse family among plant secondary metabolites, and they exhibit a wide range of pharmacological properties;however, their low content is a common problem.Transcription factors (TFs) are responsible for the regulation of coordinated expression of several genes involved in the synthetic pathway of secondary metabolites. They are in close relation to plant growth and development, morphogenesis, secondary metabolism, stress response and phytohormone signaling. As the discovery of bHLH TFs in various medicinal plants, how to use them in genetic and metabolic engineering to increase the productivity of terpenoids, realize large-scale industrial production and meet the needs of a great deal of patients have been a hot research topic. This review mainly summarizes the regulatory effect of bHLH TFs on terpenoids synthetic pathway in recent years.
