The safety problems caused by aristolochic acids have aroused wide concern in the international community.China harbors rich Chinese herbal resources.The Chinese herbal medicines derived from the plants of Aristolochia and Asarum contain aristolochic acids,which raise the concern about the safety of such Chinese herbal medicines.Scientists have conducted researches to evaluate the safety risks of aristolochic acids.Regulatory agencies have taken measures to control the safety risks of aristolochic acids.This paper systematically reviews the current situation of aristolochic acid-containing Chinese herbal medicines from chemical composition,toxicity,and detection and puts forward suggestions for the further research and supervision of these medicines.
