SWOT Analysis of Chinese Medicines for Diabetes Mellitus in China from the Patent Perspective
The prevention and treatment of diabetes mellitus has attracted wide attention in traditional Chinese medicine.Patent documents can directly reflect the core technical information and research achievements of the industry.This study analyzed the patent information and external factors and summarized the strengths,weaknesses,opportunities,and threats(SWOT)in the development of Chinese medicine patents for the treatment of diabetes mellitus in China.The strengths include having a good research and development foundation,a large number of patents,and a key region of the global Chinese medicine invention patent layout for the treatment of diabetes mellitus.The weaknesses include a low patent authorization rate,existence of abnormal patent application,lack of awareness of overseas layout,and insufficient cooperation among the applicants.As for the opportunities,China′s government encourages the development of traditional Chinese medicine and has introduced a number of normative documents to curb abnormal patent applications and took special actions to address the problems.The threats include high importance to patent protection,high patent quality,mature layout,and strong market competiveness in overseas countries.According to the results of SWOT analysis,we put forward the following suggestions to provide reference for the patent development and layout of Chinese medicines for diabetes mellitus.Specifically,the patent applicants in the field of treating diabetes mellitus with Chinese medicines should seize the opportunities of market demand and China′s policy support to broaden the industrial layout.The technical levels and market values of patents should be improved.In view of the hot areas in the international community,market gaps should be localized,on the basis of which unique technologies should be employed to develop Chinese medicine preparations meeting market demands.The strategic awareness of prioritizing patent development over product manufacturing as well as prioritizing patent application over publishing and emphasizing overseas patent layout should be fostered to occupy a position in the domestic and foreign markets in a timely manner.Finally,the research-education-production cooperation should be boosted to give full play to the complementary advantages and jointly improve the research level and patent quality in this field.
