A review on spectral characteristics of dammarane-type triterpenoid sapo-genins from Gynostemma pentaphyllum
Dammarane-type triterpenoids are believed to be major bioactive ingredients derived from Gynostem-ma pentaphyllum, this class of chemical components is also widely found in other medical plants such as Panax ginseng,Panax notoginseng,Panax quinquefolium L.Besides,it has been a hotspot of research in the field of traditional Chinese medicine due to its wide range of pharmacological activities such as antitumor and hypolipi-demic.The identification of the chemical structure of the dammarane-type triterpenoid saponin meta-fraction is difficult due to the presence of a large number of methene and methine signals superimposed in the NMR spec-trum.This review aims to summarize the structural features and spectral characteristics of sapogenins based on the spectral data of the reported dammarane-type triterpenes in Gynostemma pentaphyllum. It may provide scien-tific basis for the structural analysis of dammarane-type triterpenoid saponins in Gynostemma pentaphyllum and e-ven in other medicinal herbs.
