Correlation between Intestinal Flora Disorder and Depression and the Research Progress of TCM Prevention and Treatment
Depression is one of the leading causes of disability and reduced life expectancy, severely affecting patients' quality of life and social functioning.Recent studies have revealed that gut microbiota dysbiosis, through metabolites and inflammatory mediators, influences host immune responses and neurotransmitter levels, thereby regulating mood and behavior and contributing to the onset and progression of depression. This review summarizes the mechanisms by which the microbiota-gut-brain axis influences emotional behavior, explores the association between gut microbiota and depression, and highlights research advances in traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)for modulating the"gut-brain axis"to prevent and treat depression. It is found that TCM formulae, single herbs, their derived extracellular vesicles, and acupuncture therapy can regulate gut microbiota, influence neurotransmitter production, and modulate neuroinflammatory responses to exert antidepressant effects.
