China's poverty alleviation efforts have changed from"eliminating absolute poverty"to"allevia-ting relative poverty".In the context of digital economy,it is important to explore the digital governance path of relative poverty in China for establishing a mechanism to deal with relative poverty problems. We use the macro urban digital economy index and micro household poverty status(CFPS)from 2012 to 2020 to explore the impact and mechanism of the digital economy on relative poverty. The findings show that the digital econo-my can alleviate relative poverty. Moreover, regional differences, household types and economic development levels have a heterogeneous impact on the poverty reduction effect of the digital economy.Compared to the east-central regions and central cities, the digital economy has a more significant effect on poverty reduction in western regions and peripheral cities. We also have found that industrial structure is an important mecha-nism that the digital economy affects the relative poverty of households.Based on the above conclusions,we proposed that the development strategies of digital economy in various regions should be tailored to local condi-tions,which could accelerate the information infrastructure in poverty-stricken areas and establish long-term poverty alleviation mechanisms by the digital tools. They can accelerate the promotion of digital industrializa-tion and industrial digital transformation to achieve industrial structure upgrading.
