"Zheng Feng Is Not Licentious":the Basis for the Compilation of Wu Kaisheng's Shi Yi Hui Tong
In the1920s,the debate over the Book of Songs became increasingly intense in academia. The Preface to Poetry is not only the key to the classicization of Poetry, but also influenced the thinking and academic methods of Chinese literati for thousands of years. After the May Fourth Movement,it became the object of criticism and negation by the"Ancient History Debate School".In1927,Wu Kaisheng published the Shi Yi Hui Tong and examined the Preface to Poetry with a"discerning"perspective.Zhu Xi's Shi Ji Zhuan was praised by the Ancient History Debate School for its rejection of the Preface to Poetry in the form of"Zheng Feng's licentiousness".However,Wu Kaisheng's proposal of"Zheng Feng is not licentious"was a reac-tion against Zhu Xi,and also a response to the ancient history discernment school's denial and overthrow of the status of the study of the classics in Poetry."Zheng Feng is not licentious"is Wu Kaisheng's funda-mental judgment on Zheng Feng,as well as the"basis"for his compilation of the entire book, and the ba-sis for his discussions with the"Ancient History Debate School"faction. This foundation implies his adher-ence to traditional cultural views and his attempt to restore the concept of"propriety and education"in governing the world.
