General education in calligraphy within higher education institutions aims to provide calligraphy education to college students who are not majoring in this discipline. This initiative plays a significant role in enhancing students'aesthetic appreciation and cultural literacy, fostering their overall development, and promot-ing the inheritance of calligraphy as well as the dissemination of excellent traditional Chinese culture. To advance the development of general education in calligraphy,we conducted questionnaire surveys among stu-dents from various disciplines across multiple colleges and universities in southern Fujian. The findings revealed a high interest in calligraphy among students;however, their proficiency levels were generally unsatis-factory.Based on these insights,we propose several reform ideas for general education in calligraphy:First,it is essential to differentiate general education from specialized calligraphy education and establish appropriate expectations for students.Second, the curriculum should be thoughtfully organized, integrating a standardized general education textbook with localized content.Third,we must embrace contemporary advancements in tech-nology to enhance teaching methods and ensure scientific approaches to education.Lastly,we recommend implementing evaluation methods that are suitable for general education contexts.
