A Decision Support System for Cutting Stock Allocation

This paper considers the joint minimization of trim-loss and premium raw material in cutting stock and allocation decisions in which the fixed processing sequences of jobs are given. It shows that when the ratio of the longest order length to the shortest demand length is small, decision network techniques can be reduced to a tabular form and used as a solution procedure. The proposed solution approach first minimizes trim-loss and then minimizes the use of premium raw material by using alternative length materials whenever possible without increasing trim-loss. This solution technique is imbedded into the model management system to develop a decision support system for use by decision-makers.
