For the inaccurate problem of the river information extraction from remote sensing images affected by the bridges and other objects on the ground, a new river information extraction based on localization fuzzy connectedness was proposed. Firstly, the seed point was selected as the starting element of path in one of the river regions. Then, the fuzzy affinity of each element on path could be calculated according to the affinity function. Some concepts such as valid path, invalid path and fuzzy neighborhood connectedness were defined on the theories of fuzzy connectedness. Besides, its significance in the theories of fuzzy connectedness system was also proved. Finally, the unconnected river information was extracted completely from the whole image by the algorithm of localization fuzzy connectedness. Using the "GF-1" images as data sources, the experimental results show that this method can extract river information successfully with the advantages of good applicability and high precision.
