Conventional fulfillment centers typically include a warehouse tostore an inventory of stock items from which one or more items are picked when fulfilling an order. In somefulfillment centers, the process of picking stock items for an order is performed manually. More recently,some fulfillment centers employ an automated storage and retrieval systems (ASRS) to automate portionsof the picking process. The ASRS may provide, for example, automated retrieval of boxes (also sometimesreferred to as a “tote,” a “bin,” or a “container”) with stock items stored on shelving units, automatedpicking of stock items for an order (e.g., by moving an item from a source box containing stock itemsto a destination box containing picked items for an order), and/or automated placement of the boxes onthe shelving units (e.g., after item(s) are picked, to refill stock items). Once all the items for an orderare picked and stored in a destination box, the order can be deemed complete and further processed forpacking, shipping, and so on.”
