News editors obtained the following quote from the background information supplied by the inventors:“The robotics landscape is rapidly changing with the introduction of collaborative robots. Robots areworking beside humans and able to be deployed for a constantly growing number of tasks. With thiscomes the ability to use a single robot for many different tasks. Robots need to be rapidly redeployedand adapted to different workpieces or tasks. Different sizes, types, and shapes of material need to betransported via the robot. This requires many different robot process end effectors to be developed andmaintained. Gripping can be a challenge for a robot being deployed to do many different tasks or handlingmany different workpieces. Development of grippers for new workpieces can be very costly and take anextended period of time to develop. Maintaining a large library of robot end effectors to handle differentworkpieces or jobs can be very costly.
