From Washington, D.C., NewsRx journalists report that a patent application by the inventors Pirani, Shafaat (Lutz, FL, US); Thompson, Brett (Lutz, FL, US), filed on September 26, 2023, was made available online on February 1, 2024. No assignee for this patent application has been made. News editors obtained the following quote from the background information supplied by the inventors: “The filling of prescriptions has become a complex process. A patient must coordinate with their provider, pharmacy, payor, and the pharmacy benefit management (PBM) company to ensure that the prescription is covered by the patient’s insurance. In addition, the patient must choose a pharmacy that accepts the patient’s insurance and within their PBM’s network. There are also several price comparison and price reduction applications that can be used to determine the lowest price for the prescribed medication (e.g., GoodRx, SingleCare, Pharmacy Checker, Amazon Pharmacy, Rx Saver, and the like). If the patient does use insurance, the claim must be handled properly, and coverage must be reviewed to make sure it is correct and that the proper amounts have been paid and/or credited to a patient deductible. There are many different coverage plans, and the coverage varies with each plan. In addition, there are circumstances where it may be better to not use insurance and pay out-of-pocket for a prescription. However, it is difficult to make all of these calculations and decisions at the moment of purchase or fulfillment of a prescription.
