Findings from Shanghai Jiao Tong University Reveals New Findings on Robotics (Mo deling and Design of Lattice-reinforced Pneumatic Soft Robots)

Abstract

According to news reporting from Shanghai, People's Republic of China, by NewsRx journalists, research stated, "Lattice metamaterials exhibit di verse functions and complex spatial deformations by rational structural design. Here, lattice metamaterials are exploited to design pneumatic soft robots with p rogrammable bending, twisting, and elongation deformations." Financial support for this research came from National Natural Science Foundatio n of China (NSFC). The news correspondents obtained a quote from the research from Shanghai Jiao To ng University, "The system comprises an elastomeric tube reinforced by lattice m etamaterials. We develop an analytical framework to model the twisting, bending, and elongation finite deformation taking into account the geometric orthotropy and nonlinear elasticity. We experimentally validate our modeling approach and i nvestigate the effects of geometric patterns and input loading on the soft actua tors' deformation. Theoretical guided design of lateral-climbing soft robots and exploration soft manipulators are demonstrated. The soft actuator could exhibit a combined twisting-bending-elongation deformation by lattice superimposition." According to the news reporters, the research concluded: "The proposed structura l design method paves the way for designing soft robots with complex and dextero us deformations."
