News editors obtained the following quote from the background information suppli ed by the inventors: “Railcars of trains may be transported under extreme condit ions, such as extreme temperatures and vibrations. The extreme conditions may af fect the integrity of some components of the railcar. For example, the extreme c onditions experienced by railcars may lead to wear of various components of the railcar. The components may include wheels, railcar coupler securement systems, air hoses, braking systems, axles, springs, or any other components of the railc ar. Visual inspection of worn components on the railcars may be labor intensive and may only be available while a train is stopped at a station. In some example s, the components may become dislodged due to railcar vibration and temperature changes. Visual inspection of these components may be labor intensive and may on ly be available while a train is stopped at a station. Therefore, there exists a long felt but unresolved need for systems, methods, and apparatuses that improv e railcar component inspection by automatically analyzing the components of the railcars both during transport of the railcars and while the railcars are statio nary, such as at a rail yard.”
