Abstract

The following quote was obtained by the news editors from the background informa tion supplied by the inventors: “Widely known are various kinds of batteries hav ing various forms. Some of the batteries are manufactured by coiling roll-shaped positive and negative electrodes insulated from each other with a separator int erposed therebetween, flattening the coiled electrodes into an elliptical shape, and sealing them into a rectangular can, for example. This form, however, has m any useless spaces between the elliptical battery and the can. There have also b een developed laminated batteries manufactured by layering several combinations of a positive electrode, a separator, a negative electrode, and a separator havi ng a sheet (rectangular) shape and accommodating the layered electrodes into a r ectangular can. Laminated batteries have fewer useless spaces in the can. In the laminated batteries, however, the separators cut into the sheet shape are diffi cult to handle, making it complicated to accurately position and layer each sepa rator between the positive electrode and the negative electrode.
