This patent application has not been assigned to a company or institution. The following quote was obtained by the news editors from the background informa tion supplied bythe inventors: “In comparison to searches for textual data, an image search introduces an additional layerof complexity to the search process, since the media being searched does not directly correspond to thesearch terms . To overcome the hurdles presented by searching images directly, an image searc h mayinvolve searching through metadata (e.g., tags, tag data) that includes in formation associated with thecontent of corresponding images. In some cases, th e metadata is the result of the images having beenprocessed using manual or aut omated image tagging techniques that result in basic information relatingto the content of the respective images. When searched, the tagged images that are ret urned may berelevant (e.g., the content of the search terms is included in the image) but not necessarily useable by theuser. For example, a search for a famo us landmark, such as a famous building, may result in an image inwhich the land mark is far in the background of the image or mostly obstructed by some other ob ject inthe image.
