News editors obtained the following quote from the background information suppli ed by the inventors:“Flexible multipurpose automated laboratory equipment that incorporates robotics may be used for anumber of purposes such as, for example, a liquid handler, a Viscometer, and a Micro Buffer Exchange(“MBX”). In some ex amples, the MBX may exchange as many as 48 450 mL formulations using specific filter plates, volume check devices, and pressure chambers to urge the transfer of excipients. Formulationsmay also be concentrated with duplicates being pooled at the end of the MBX process. While thesesystems may be customizable and exten sible, these systems may require complicated setups processes,they may require skilled individuals to properly operate, and may require extensive software deve lopment.These challenges may lead to inefficiencies during all stages of proces sing. More specifically, many existingsystems have difficulty with meeting targ eted concentration values for a number of reasons, and may resultin efficiencie s of approximately 35%.
