News editors obtained the following quote from the background information suppli ed by the inventors:“Many quantum algorithms offer theoretical improvements in computational efficiency over their classicalcounterparts. Shor’s algorithm, fo r example, provides a near-exponential reduction in the computationalcomplexity of factoring integers into prime numbers. And Grover’s algorithm offers a quadr atic speed-upfor unstructured search problems. If such algorithms could be impl emented for large problem instances onquantum hardware, it would accelerate pro gress in many fields of scientific inquiry, including chemistry,biology, medici ne, and finance.
