News editors obtained the following quote from the background information suppli ed by the inventors:“Typically linkages, gears, shafts, belts in conjunction wi th actuators (for example, motors, manual,hydraulics, weight) are used to condu ct the motions and forces generated by the actuators to anotherlocation. This c onduction of motions and forces to another location is referred to as transmissi on.Examples include bicycle chain drives, clock gears and automobile timing bel ts. These examples have oneattribute in common. They perform bi-directional tra nsmission. A shaft may exert torque in a positive ornegative sense, as can gear s and timing belts. Similarly an electric motor can cause motion in either direction.
