The following quote was obtained by the news editors from the background informa tion supplied by theinventors: “This disclosure relates to a welding system and welder used, for example, to secure fastenersto stampings.“The production of complex assemblies such as vehicles, appliances, consumer goo ds, and furnitureoften requires the fabrication of welded subassemblies, such a s sheet metal workpieces with one or morewelded fasteners. In the production of an assembly as complex as a vehicle, there can be a considerablequantity and v ariety of such sheet metal workpieces that are produced in a stamping operation for laterwelding in batches to produce the required welded subassemblies. A mac hine operator must remove arandomly oriented and sometimes interlocked sheet me tal workpiece from the storage bin before loadingit into the welding machine. A second component is then added manually or by automation in preparationfor wel ding. In the case of resistance welding, two electrodes close upon the workpiece and secondcomponent before applying force and a high current necessary for com pleting the resistance weld. Thefinished subassembly is then removed from the m achine in preparation for repeating the welding operation.
