The following quote was obtained by the news editors from the background informa tion supplied bythe inventors: “An emerging technology is autonomous vehicles ( AVs) that can navigate by themselves onurban roads. Such vehicles must not only perform complex manoeuvres among people and other vehicles,but they must often do so while guaranteeing stringent constraints on the probability of adverse ev entsoccurring, such as collisions with these agents in the environments. An aut onomous vehicle, also known asa self-driving vehicle, refers to a vehicle which has a sensor system for monitoring its external environmentand a control syste m that is capable of making and implementing driving decisions automatically usi ngthose sensors. This includes in particular the ability to automatically adapt the vehicle speed and directionof travel based on perception inputs from the s ensor system. A fully-autonomous or “driverless” vehiclehas sufficient decision -making capability to operate without any input from a human driver. However,th e term “autonomous vehicle” as used herein also applies to semi-autonomous vehic les, which havemore limited autonomous decision-making capability and therefore still require a degree of oversight froma human driver. Other mobile robots ar e being developed, for example for carrying freight supplies ininternal and ext ernal industrial zones. Such mobile robots would have no people on-board and bel ongto a class of mobile robot termed UAV (unmanned autonomous vehicle). Autonom ous air mobile robots(drones) are also being developed.
