News editors obtained the following quote from the background information suppli ed by the inventors:“Minimally invasive surgical procedures including both endo scopic and laparoscopic procedures permitsurgery to be performed on organs, tis sues and vessels far removed from an opening within the tissue. Inlaparoscopic procedures, the abdominal cavity is insufflated with an insufflation gas, e.g., CO2, to createa pneumoperitoneum thereby providing access to the underlying organs . A laparoscopic instrument isintroduced through a cannula accessing the abdomi nal cavity to perform one or more surgical tasks. Thecannula may incorporate a seal to establish a substantially fluid tight seal about the instrument to preserve the integrity of the pneumoperitoneum.
