The following quote was obtained by the news editors from the background informa tion supplied bythe inventors: “In the last few years carrying a mobile computi ng device (e.g., smart phones, tablets, andothers) has become a common practice among many people. These devices enable users to have quick andeasy access to a variety of applications, including email, instant messaging, social media, and others. At thesame token, those applications have gained the power to “notify” the user from the application at almostany time, sometimes even at times that are not convenient or not wanted. Thus, users of these mobiledevices are often bombarded with many notifications. Due to a sheer volume of notifications, a use r maymiss notifications, for example, because the user may start ignoring notif ications until an appropriate time.In addition, the user may have difficulty de termining which notifications are important while reviewingthe plethora of the notification that are shown on the mobile device. Furthermore, vast numbers of notifications may make using these mobile devices inefficient. For example, the u ser may receive too manynotifications in a short period of time and may be unab le to respond to the notifications in a timelymanner. This creates the need for additional notifications to be sent later (e.g., reminder notifications),which may use up additional computing resources and/or the time of other users. It ma y be difficult todetermine when to send a notification to a user.
