News editors obtained the following quote from the background information suppli ed by the inventors:“In case of a damage to the aircraft surface due to an impa ct such as for example a bird strike orcaused by a ground vehicle an investigat ion of the damage to the surface is needed. This investigationincludes normally the evaluation of the damage size and in some cases a non-destructive testing ( NDT)of the damage area. All the required work steps must be carried out by auth orized and certified aircraftmaintenance personnel. In case the necessary perso nnel is not present at the actual location of the aircraft,the aircraft cannot release back to operation and must be grounded until the personnel for the requi redwork steps is available. Such an unforeseen ground time causes additional co sts for the operator of theaircraft.
