First, by understanding failure modes,machines can be subject to scheduled main tenance to prevent many instances of failure. Second, a deeperunderstanding of failure modes can reduce costs, time, and risks associated with maintenance by a llowingmaintenance personnel to quickly identify and address problems. Third, a clear view of the ways in whichmachines and their components tend to fail can provide information useful for improving the manufacturingof machines and compo nents, for instance by reducing weaknesses or avoiding unnecessary focus on areas unlikely to present problems. Accordingly, improved techniques for identifying machine failure modes inan automated fashion are desired.”
