Abstract

From the background information supplied by the inventors, news correspondents o btained the followingquote: “In certain fast-changing contexts, such as warehou se and manufacturing contexts, existingautonomous mobile robot (AMR) technology is insufficient to safely integrate robots into a workplace. Forexample, in a warehouse context, decisions need to constantly be made based on changing condit ions,such as new arrivals of objects to be unloaded and moved, constantly chang ing candidate locations todrop off objects, constant movement of other robots a nd of humans, and the like. Moreover, due toconstraints on sensors (e.g., a con straint of a camera sensor to only detect objects that are not occluded),even s tatic environments may reveal unforeseen circumstances as the surroundings of th ose environmentschange. Changing conditions, and discovery of complexity in tas ks as sensors detect unexpected objects,can complicate even simple tasks, such as unloading objects from a vehicle into appropriate areas of afacility. Existi ng technology does not enable robots to have an understanding of a three-dimensi onal,dynamic environment of this type, and thus, this sort of activity is perfo rmed by humans.”
