News editors obtained the following quote from the background information suppli ed by the inventors: “Process mining encompasses a variety of computer-implement ed techniques for modeling and analyzing operational processes based on event da ta that is captured in event logs. Typically, event data includes a unique ident ifier and corresponding description of each distinct event of a process. Event d ata corresponding to a distinct event of the process can be timestamped and elec tronically recorded in an event log. Information recorded as event data can incl ude, for example, the resources used, and the costs incurred in performing the p rocess, as well as other process-related attributes. Process discovery is a proc ess mining technique that transforms event data into a model of the process. Con formance checking is another process mining technique, which can be used in anal yzing comparisons between the process model and an event log to discover and ide ntify any discrepancies between the actual performance of the process and the mo del version of the process. Performance analysis is still another process mining technique, which can be used in attempting to improve the process model with re spect to certain performance metrics.”
